Field Studies
The Challenge
A major E&P company continues to explore ways to increase production from older fields in east Texas. Like most older fields, there is a mountain of data and information associated with it – production and reserves data, maps, logs, previous studies, reports, core data, etc. Numerous interpreters have worked the field and new team members need to get up-to-speed quickly. But what well data, log information, and interpreted maps comprise the “gold standard” from which to start? Furthermore, the asset manager wants a re-evaluation the reservoir’s tight gas play potential and a complete “locked-down” and searchable collection of the data, information, and knowledge that forms the basis the field study and the foundation for any redevelopment decisions. 3GiG delivers a technology solution to provide a way to support field studies and re-evaluations.
The 3GiG Solution
A ground-up evaluation of a field’s redevelopment potential will identify valuable historical data and create a large amount of new information. If the E&P company wishes to outsource the field study, 3GiG works with our partner, Knowledge Reservoir (www.Knowledge-Reservoir.com), to provide a complete solution. 3GiG provides the online knowledge base that is populated with cleaned-up data and new technical information created by our consulting partner.
A finalized field study package typically includes:
- All historical data in many formats
- Reports and presentations
- Core interpretations
- Petrophysical analysis
- Maps and cross sections
- Well and production data
| - Composite logs
- Log database
- Geologic interpretation database
- Reserves calculations
- Reserves methodologies
- Original LAS and TIFF flat files

3GiG’s Prospect Director creates an online knowledge base to capture the study and its contextual information for use by the E&P company. 3GiG’s Prospect Director generates a “lockable”, searchable database of the entire study. In a locked knowledge base, data can be queried, viewed, reported on and downloaded. However, the original version is permanently stored thus ensuring that the integrity of the original field study and dataset is perpetually honored. Optionally, an unlocked configuration allows the database to become evergreen with an audit trail enabling users and managers to keep track of work done in the field or changes in interpretation and analysis. Prospect Director’s highly flexible configuration intelligently organizes all project-related data, information and files, dramatically reducing the time it takes to find information or having to buy the data over again because it can’t be found. Data and information is stored using the language and acronyms unique to the E&P company. Context is maintained. Users can search and download information based on their own taxonomy such as workflow, zone, data type, or deliverable. The resulting knowledge base enables multidisciplinary teams, within and beyond the asset team, to search, investigate and access critical knowledge of the field area.
Thus highly valuable field studies and their associated data are preserved, creating a core “gold standard” from which future work can be based. New team members can use this data to get up-to-speed more rapidly and start contributing sooner.
